This ossuary is a part of the Jouguji Temple. Since durability and fire resistance were important considerations, we chose to use a reinforced precast concrete frame covered with stone cladding. To prevent water damage, we raised the building off the ground and built in gaps between the floor and wall to allow sunlight and ventilation to penetrate. A weathering-steel roof protects the frame and provides further ventilation. There is no insulation, glass, air conditioning units, electric wiring, or caulked joints. The building is composed simply of smooth concrete and steel, without a single crack.
