This project was a renovation of an existing student counseling center located within the university campus. We built an attached clinic right next to the counselor's office, and created a relaxing, comfortable space using warm wood tones. Our objective was to provide patients with a salon-like atmosphere where communication could flow freely. In addition to catering to those with physical injuries and illnesses, this health center also allows patients to discuss emotional and psychological issues with staff members without feeling any restraint. Although the private consultation rooms are adjacent to each other, they were also created so that group counseling sessions centering on the salon can be held. Partitions were therefore added to produce a feeling of breadth and spaciousness that seems to extend up until the corridor. The wooden louvers and glass panels in these areas were designed as a single set of fixtures that would serve as soundproofing barriers while also helping to soften and deflect lines of sight. The indirect illumination and wooden louvers disperse light and the sensation of being watched, creating a relaxed atmosphere. The fabrics we used were mostly chosen for their subdued colors, but brighter and more vivid hues were also selectively used as accents.
